1. Go straight for the discounted stuff

When I pop into the grocery store, I head straight for the discounted produce section.  Here, I can buy my bananas, avocados, mangos, zucchini, etc. for a much cheaper price.  And I don’t have to wait for them to ripen… which is another plus in my book!

  1. Stock up and freeze

This kind of goes along with #1, but after I buy these discounted produce, I cut them up, place them in a gallon zip lock bag and freeze them.  By buying ripe mangos and freezing them, you can save a lot of money compared to buying those prepackaged frozen mangos.  Usually I can buy 2 mangos for only $1!  Personally I think freezing my own mangoes taste much better than the store bought frozen food.    Same thing goes for bananas.  I love buying “rotten” bananas in bulk for a $1 and freezing them.  This money saving trick is a must!

  1. Shop mainly in the produce section

When people think of vegan food, they get the idea that it is very expensive.  This is true if you are eating like you would on a regular American diet and replacing the food with vegan food.  For example, if you are buying Toferkey, Daiya Cheese and making a sandwich every day for lunch, this will definitely put a dent in your wallet after a while.   If you really want to save money, I would stay away from fake meat and cheese as much as possible.  Instead, try making yummy salads, vegan sushi, pasta dishes, tacos, etc. with the produce you buy.  Vegan versions of food are always very expensive because the demand is so low… natural law of economics. Since non-vegans and vegans both eat fruits and vegetables, the demand is high, making them a much cheaper option.  Try making yummy vegan dishes that don’t require too many vegan substitutes.

  1. Prepare rice, beans, oatmeal ahead of time

These are really cheap food staples that you can find at any grocery store.  The problems with these items are that they are just soooo time consuming to make.  That’s why when I make rice, bean, or oatmeal (steal cut), I like to make a big batch and freeze them!  I will place an image of how I freeze my rice:

After I do this, all I have to do is take out one of the square rice blocks and reheat it in the microwave with a little bit of water.  It’s just that simple.

  1. Invest in a silicon steamer

This is no joke.  This item has saved my life/time.  I bought mine in Japan but you can buy this steamer on Amazon Norpro Silicone Steamer.  I am a very impatient person and this little gadget makes steaming vegetables, rice, baking potatoes, tolerable.  It only takes about 3 minutes in the microwave to steam anything!

  1. Buy expensive condiments on sale

It’s always nice to have some nice vegan condiments like vegan mayo on hand but these items can sometimes be so expensive!  As I talked about earlier, vegan items are not high in demand causing prices to be preeetty high.  This can be to our advantage sometimes!  Often times you can find interesting vegan condiments discounted because they passed the sell by date.  These items can be in still perfect condition yet you can get them for a much cheaper price.  It’s nice to stock up on vegan pantry items while they are on clearance.

  1. Stay away from buying too many nuts

Lastly, if you really want to save money, I would avoid buying too many nuts. A lot of vegan desserts, creams, etc. require cashews but they can be so expensive!  Nuts in general are never cheap.   I wouldn’t avoid them all together but if you are really trying to save money, I would buy beans instead.
